The Importance of a Threshold
The existence of a biological threshold has potential impact on the level of the PM standard selected and estimates of reduced PM mortality resulting from reduced PM air pollution.
Epidemiological models assume linearity - no threshold.
The assumption of no threshold plays an important role in much of the supporting material that the CD relies upon. The existence of a threshold or nonlinear effect would call into question many of the published results cited in Chapter 8.
